Trapped in the Cycle
You've had the same fight a hundred times. The issue changes. The pattern doesn't. And no matter what you try, you end up in the same place.
Examine what shaped you — choose what comes next.

You've had the same fight a hundred times. The issue changes. The pattern doesn't. And no matter what you try, you end up in the same place.
Wondering if you're actually choosing your path or just following the script handed down by family, culture, or your past.
Co-parenting feels like a constant battle. You want to be on the same team, but you can't figure out how to get there.
You're the caretaker, the glue, the empath — and you're exhausted. You're always there for everyone else, but who is there for you? You're ready to learn how to show up for others while also showing up for yourself.
You feel overwhelmed by uncertainty about your faith, your sexuality, your relationship structure, or your career path. You want to figure it out, but you don't know where to start.
Maybe your last therapist spent the first three sessions trying to understand ethical non-monogamy. Or maybe you never brought it up at all, because feeling quietly judged felt worse than not getting help. You want a therapist who can skip past the explainer and get to the real work.
There may be differing sensory needs, different rhythms, or different ways of processing time and language. If you and/or your partner experience ADHD, autism, OCD, or another type of neurodivergence, you don't need therapy to force you into a neurotypical mold; you need a relationship that helps you grow as you actually are.
At ISDR, we customize therapy to meet your unique life — not the other way around. Our clients often feel like they are a different kind of plant than the one their previous therapists expected. They come to us after trying to force themselves into conditions that just don't fit, and they end up asking:
"Why can't I make this work? Am I the problem?"
Our experts begin by asking:
"What psychological nutrients do you need in order to flourish?"
We view psychological health like plant health: provide the right conditions, and natural flourishing follows. For people, those conditions are:
A shade plant doesn't struggle in direct sunlight because it's broken — it struggles because it's in the wrong conditions. At ISDR, our specialists help you cultivate the conditions that support flourishing, working with who you are and what you actually need.

Most therapy practices draw from a collection of evidence-based methods and match clients to whichever clinician fits best. We do that too — but we also work from a common framework: Self-Determined Relationship Therapy (SDRT), which was co-developed here at ISDR.
This approach is rooted in decades of research on motivation, behavior change, and human flourishing. It emphasizes building a strong therapeutic relationship, understanding your unique history and values, and collaboratively designing a treatment plan that fits your life — not forcing you to fit within a specific framework.
ISDR also offers telehealth throughout Utah, with select clinicians licensed in Kansas and Missouri.
We can't guarantee outcomes — no ethical therapist can. What we can tell you is that the research on evidence-based therapy is strong, and that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most consistent predictors of whether it works. That's why we offer a free 15-minute consultation first. If we're not the right match, we can point you towards resources that may help you find a better fit.
We try to make therapy fit you, not the other way around. That said, there are a few situations where we're not the right fit — either because we're a specialty practice rather than a generalist one, or because what you need is in a different scope of clinical work:

That's exactly what the consultation is for. You don't commit to anything by reaching out. The first call is a conversation about what's bringing you in, what you're looking for, and whether the fit feels right. Some people start with a handful of sessions to get a sense of the work before deciding anything long-term.
ISDR is not in-network with any insurance carrier. Some of our therapists are in-network through Headway — a separate billing platform that contracts with therapists individually, even when they work at an out-of-network practice like ISDR.
Those clinicians can see you in-network for individual therapy with certain insurance carriers. At ISDR, couples, relationship, and family therapy is always self-pay — we don't bill relational work to any insurer. For out-of-network sessions we can provide a superbill to submit to your insurer for possible partial reimbursement.
If you have any questions, reach out for a free consultation and we can discuss possible insurance coverage.
Standard sessions are 50 minutes, for individual, couples, and family therapy alike. Longer sessions are available when they're clinically useful — time beyond 50 minutes is pro-rated by the minute and added to the session fee, and you and your therapist would agree on that ahead of time.
We require a minimum of 24 hours' notice for cancellations. Late cancellations and no-shows will be charged the full session fee. For clients using insurance (Headway), you're charged the therapist's full out-of-network rate, as late cancellations and no-shows are not covered by insurance. Current rates are listed here: Session fees
Emergencies happen. If an exceptional circumstance prevents you from giving notice, reach out as soon as you can — we handle these situations individually and with care.
Yes. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions for clients located anywhere in Utah — including Salt Lake City, Heber, Provo, Ogden, St. George, Logan, and beyond. Select clinicians are also licensed in Kansas and Missouri. Many clients prefer the convenience of doing deep therapeutic work from the comfort of their own homes.
Research shows the therapeutic relationship is an important predictor of success. During your initial free 15-minute consultation, we'll discuss what brings you to therapy and who might be a good fit for your goals.
